THE Government hopes the Singapore film industry will be strong enough to stand on its own feet within 15 to 20 years, said Mr Seto Lok Yin, the Media Development Authority's assistant chief executive officer.

By then, it will offer grants only to films that serve public policy goals. For instance, shows that promote family values.

Mega Media managing director Jonathan Foo agrees: 'We must move away from an industry depending on government handouts, although weaning local companies off such funds...may not be easy.'

'I'm optimistic that it will happen,' said Mr Seto.
