It may look like companies across the board are downsizing, but a few industries still face a talent crunch.

Human resource consultancy Manpower Staffing Service's country manager, Mr Philippe Capsie, singled out health care, IT and social services as those still needing to fill jobs. Security, construction and service staff will also likely remain in demand, thanks in part to the two upcoming integrated resorts.

In sectors like oil and gas and IT, vacancies are for positions that come with niche and specific skills. But other industries, like social services and hospitality, face a manpower shortage because of their low pay and long hours, said Mr Capsie.

Findings from the company's most recent Manpower Employment Outlook Survey showed that most employers will decrease or freeze their headcounts in the first quarter of this year.

'Even now, we have observed that job seekers are becoming more realistic in their expectations in their job searches and when negotiating their remuneration packages. This year, we expect more job seekers to turn to 'less glamorous' positions in order to make ends meet,' he said.
