Thanks to a team from Singapore, one village in India is a step closer to breaking their poverty cycle and moving towards financial independence.

The programme implemented by these tertiary students involved introducing a greenhouse, methane plant and computer literacy programme to villagers in Sevapur, India.

Team Singapore then presented the results of this community outreach project to a panel of business leaders from multinational companies during the SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise) World Cup.

SIFE is a global non-profit organisation which mobilises students to impact their communities while developing skills to become socially responsible business leaders.

The competition saw team Singapore emerge as one of the finalists in the international competition which ran from Oct 1 to Oct 3. This year was Singapore's best showing at the competition.

Teams are judged on how successful they were at creating economic opportunities for others through their projects.

Mr Christopher Hurd, Chairman of the SIFE Singapore board said, "This has been the best ever SIFE World Cup, as SIFE teams from 41 countries have showcased their amazing work in local communities around the world."

Canada emerged as the champion for their environmental awareness programme to elementary school students, which resulted in C$1.4 million (about S$1.88 million) being reinvested into their local province.
