KL gears up to help laid-off workers
Retrenchment fund and reserved jobs for locals among possible moves. -ST
By Teo Cheng Wee KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government is mulling over measures such as forcing companies to reserve jobs for locals, and to advertise all vacancies on its job website as it prepares for a wave of retrenchments next year. Human Resources Minister S. Subramaniam said his ministry is also considering a national retrenchment fund to help displaced workers. How the government handles the economic situation will be crucial, as major layoffs could have serious implications for a ruling party already in disarray.
