KL gears up to help laid-off workers

Retrenchment fund and reserved jobs for locals among possible moves. -ST

KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian government is mulling over measures such as forcing companies to reserve jobs for locals, and to advertise all vacancies on its job website as it prepares for a wave of retrenchments next year.

Human Resources Minister S. Subramaniam said his ministry is also considering a national retrenchment fund to help displaced workers.

How the government handles the economic situation will be crucial, as major layoffs could have serious implications for a ruling party already in disarray.
