Strong support for SERS affirmed: survey

HDB's surveys of residents who were offered the Selective En bloc Redevelopment Scheme (SERS) shows that the programme continues to win their strong support. Satisfaction levels with the new improved living environment have gone up. Kinship and community ties built up over the years have also been retained.

A recent survey conducted by HDB in 2007 showed that support for SERS remained strong at 85%.Most households were happy with SERS and the time given to prepare for the move. They were also satisfied with remaining in the same estate, being near their previous neighbours and the better living environment.

The survey also showed that satisfaction with the new living environment was high, with satisfaction levels close to 80% or more. Residents were not only satisfied with their replacement flats, but also with the blocks and the common areas within their new precincts.

Overall, 96% of the residents said that their present living arrangement was ideal. As the replacement sites are generally located close to the sites identified for SERS, residents' kinship ties remained intact. The proportion of residents who indicated that their married children visited them at least once a month remained unchanged at nine in ten before and after moving to the replacement sites.

As the SERS residents moved en bloc to the replacement sites, community ties developed over the years were preserved. The majority of them, 72%, said relations with their neighbours had either improved or remained the same. The average number of families whom they could recognise at the replacement site was about 17, among which five were newly acquainted. Some 80% of those surveyed said they intended to get to know more neighbours, which augurs well for the development of even closer neighbourly ties.

More than nine in ten (91%) agreed that SERS has helped to preserve community ties in the estate. Many felt this way because they were still living in the same vicinity with familiar neighbours. A high proportion of them (94%) expressed a sense of belonging to their estates as they had lived there for a long time and were familiar with the area.

Apart from having sufficient time to move, the majority of the residents (88%) found the SERS information package given to them during the SERS announcement useful. The proportion of residents who found the information package sufficient was also high at 85%.

The survey findings reaffirm the popularity of SERS among the residents.
