Don't look upon S'pore products as inferior goods
Thu, Apr 30, 2009
my paper

I READ with great pride the report, 'Singaporeans place trust in home-grown banks' (my paper, April 29).

Besides banks, many Singapore brands in retail, telecommunications and insurance are able to compete with global ones.

A case in point is Singapore Airlines, which has won international recognition for excellent service, amenities and reliability.

Such organisations attribute their success to foresight, hard work and a sense of corporate responsibility.

What makes them stand out is their relentless effort to innovate and improve.

Our can-do spirit has been instrumental in developing Singapore into a First World nation within four decades.

We should not allow complacency to set in, otherwise we will lose our competitive edge.

It is deplorable that some Singaporeans are still distrustful of home-grown brands.

To them, anything foreign and imported is always better than locally- made products, be they electrical appliances, furniture or shoes.

We should not look upon our products as inferior goods. This attitude has to change.
