Retailers can take cue from Japan

I REFER to the article by Mr Leow Ju-Len, "It's simple - good service equals more money" (my paper, Oct 2).

When I was studying in Japan, my Japanese teacher said her daughter had to show that she could smile before getting hired - and this was for a part-time job.

Retailers in Singapore could take a cue from the Japanese. However, the downside of this is a society where politeness is merely a facade, and not a genuine show of sentiment.

I like how Singaporeans interact freely with people of other races, religions and cultures.

There is no "underclass of domestic helpers" in Japan, as Japanese do not wish to add to their living costs as they are already grappling with paying for their three meals and rising rent.
