The Enterprise 50 Awards 2007, Special Projects Unit
One-stop service is a winner

Jian Huang Construction

ESTABLISHED in 1996 by the husband-and-wife team of Mr Lee Chong Chin and Ms Annie Gan, Jian Huang Construction has branched out and specialised in designing and building industrial warehouses since 2002. It has more than 100 management staff and over 400 workers. This year, it receives its second Enterprise 50 award.

Mr Lee, executive director of Jian Huang Construction, says: "The company has four core values in place that we emphasise and adhere to. The first is that of safety in the projects we undertake. The quality of the buildings and the cost of each project is important to our clients, as is the time of completion for each project."

Jian Huang Construction has managed to stay ahead of competitors by delivering on projects that cater to the clients' needs at a competitive cost, and it tries to complete its projects at least a month ahead of time.

The company is able to do this because it has invested in machinery and equipment, and it also manages a pool of workers who work exclusively for Jian Huang on renewable contracts of 12 to 14 months.

"This allows for better time control in both the machinery and manpower, which result in the clients benefiting because they can use the building at a much earlier date," says Mr Lee, who was trained in information technology.

The company handles about six building construction projects annually, from medium to big industrial buildings. Its target next year is to take on at least six to eight projects, each lasting 12 to 14 months. Its clients are mainly logistics companies, such as Sin Hin Hang and C&P Logistics.

"Our one-stop design and build service is the reason why clients come back to us, because they only deal with one party. Jian Huang does the design, the building and addresses every professional concern for them such as securing the land site and building proposals," says Mr Lee.

"Our designs are functional, presentable and most importantly, easy to maintain for the next 20 to 30 years."

On the E50 award, Mr Lee says that it is certainly recognition for the company's work, but it is also a bigger challenge for the company to continue to improve.

"We are expanding beyond Singapore and looking into countries such as Vietnam and Malaysia, by importing our business model there," he says.

"We are also diversifying the company's services by investing more in our equipment supply company, and also by branching into the marine industry as the first company in Singapore to offer four environmentally friendly equipment for paint coating removal on ships."

As part of its growth strategy, the company is projecting itself as a new generation company that utilises new technology and offers innovative services.

Mr Lee explains: "We are able to do this now because we have built a good foundation for the company, and this is important for us to keep growing and to offer excellence in construction, as our name implies."
