Chinese courts and administrative bodies deal with more than 100,000 intellectual property rights (IPR) violation cases every year. Many of these are brought by foreign companies.

In this case, Mr Yuan, a Chinese gluemaker had violated 221 trademarks of well-known western brands of glue such as UTT, Castell, Araldite and Super Glue. The American company has been trying to pin him down since 2001.

HP launches IP licensing group

Summary: Reports on Hewlett-Packard Co. (HP) following in the footsteps of IBM and Microsoft Corp. with the launch of an intellectual property licensing group. HP moved its intellectual property (IP) portfolio of patents, trade marks, copyrights and trade secrets to a separate holding company, which will be managed by the new IP licensing group.

According to HP, the purpose of this move is to increase its revenue and improve their connections with technical partners. HP's worldwide IP portfolio includes 21,000 patents, 4,000 of which were granted in 2003.
