I AM a working mother of two school-going boys. For some time now, I have tried to enrol in a Diploma in Pre-School Education Teaching course.
From my inquiries, I found that those who work can attend part-time courses on Saturdays and after working hours on weekdays, in my case after either 5.30pm, 6pm or 7pm. I work half day on alternate Saturdays.
For a working mother like me, there are a lot of obstacles to attend these courses. Due to family commitments, I have to get home as soon as possible after work, especially for my children. Even if I were to take up the course, by the time I reach the training centre I will be late for class (most start at 7pm). Employers won't be happy to have employees rushing off early to attend courses, especially if the course is not related to their job.
Can the Ministry of Education (MOE) tailor a programme for housewives and working women who wish to pursue the Diploma in Pre-School Education Teaching course online or via external studies? Trainees can be asked to attend a compulsory lecture, say once or twice a month, to assess their understanding of the course and for any tests, group discussions or practical activities.
Alternatively, training centres can be set up in the north (Woodlands or Marsiling) as most are in the city and central area.
Many housewives and working women out there share my problem and will be relieved if MOE can come up with a good solution. Please enable us to upgrade ourselves to pursue better job opportunities.
