Facebook can kill your career

A wild, drunken night out with your girlfriends may all be in good fun, but posting pictures of that wild night on popular social networking website Facebook could ruin your career.

If you or your friends can see it, chances are, your boss (or future employer!) can take a look too.

Careerbuilder.com, a US-based online job site, recently published the results of a survey which found that 22 per cent of hiring managers screened job applicants through sites like Facebook. A third of these managers said that some of the things they found in an applicant's profile was enough for them to junk their application.

Here are some tips from Her World on how to keep your profile work safe.

  • Post a proper photo of yourself, fully clothed and no compromising positions, please.
  • Update your status but leave the more intimate details of your life out. That means no "Jenny is taking a long shower with your boyfriend."
  • Make sure that only modest photos of yourself are uploaded. Provocative photos might send the wrong message to a potential employer.
  • Your hobbies could give you an edge, especially if they're relevant to the job you're eyeing. For an advertising position, listing some of your favourite books, such as Guerilla Advertising wouldn't hurt.

Get a copy of Her World's January issue for more tips and the full report.
