IT HAS been a gloomy time for businesses. There is news of factories in China closing down, demand for goods slowing, stock prices plummeting everywhere, corporations reporting losses and retrenchments being carried out.
Retrenchment may be inevitable during such bad times. However, workers should also make themselves 'recession- proof' so they can survive. Here are a few tips:
Do an excellent job
Companies will not release star performers. Workers should always strive to attain high standards in their work.
Be flexible
Workers should always be ready to take on new roles and responsibilities, adapt to changes and carry out tasks beyond their job scope as needed.
Some rigid workers are unwilling to move beyond their job scope and learn new things. They will be the first to go when the company holds a retrenchment exercise.
Don't worry, be happy
Happy workers are effective in their work and produce quality work.
Their good attitude is contagious, and they spread their happiness to people who are working with them.
They build good rapport with their colleagues and bosses. In contrast, some workers are not happy. They are power- hungry and always want to be in control.
They frustrate their subordinates and do not build good rapport with workmates and superiors. Such workers are at risk during retrenchment exercises.
Add value to your job
Workers have to innovate and improve their work daily. They must always reflect on why they are doing what they do, and whether their work is a genuine contribution.
They should always be pro-active and think of new ideas, and not wait until called upon by the boss to do so.
