Take stock of relevant skills before going into banking

Q I AM in my early 30s and have been working in the information technology line as a systems administrator for over 10 years. I am getting bored with the routine and would like to venture into a new field.

I have heard that banking is a booming industry. What jobs are available, and what courses must I take in order for me to work in this field?

A IT IS understandable that you feel bored, having done the same thing for over 10 years. Besides considering a switch to a different industry, you should also consider how you can make your current job more fulfilling.

Try to explore how you can expand your job scope or move to a different role within the same industry, given your experience and knowledge.

It is true that the banking industry is growing rapidly, but it is not the only sector that is expanding. You should evaluate what skills and experience you possess that will be relevant to the banking sector. You should not decide to move into an industry simply because it is growing fast.

Like all industries, the financial services sector goes through cycles and has its ups and downs. IT was the fastest-growing sector just a few years ago.

If you are really keen on banking opportunities, you can explore an IT role in a financial institution where your existing skills are needed.

It appears, though, that you are looking for a career switch to a non-IT role. In this case, your options within the banking industry can be rather limited, as most positions are highly specialised and require certain knowledge and expertise. This may involve risk management, credit review or analysis, or knowledge of financial products.

You can take courses outside your area of work or post-graduate programmes to open doors to new opportunities in a different industry.

Alternatively, if you decide to remain in the IT industry, you should seek to upgrade your skills by taking courses relevant to your industry or work, as this will help in your advancement.
