Is 40 years old too late for career switch?

Q I am 36 and have been in the service industry for almost 12 years. Five years ago, I obtained a diploma in management studies. I am now thinking of pursuing a degree in business administration. By the time I graduate, I would be about 40. Would it be too late to make a career switch?

I am undecided about going to an overseas university or a local and private one. If I choose a local university, is it advisable to work and study at the same time or should I study full-time?

A Attaining a degree may give you a slight edge in making a career transition. However, what is even more critical is whether you have transferable skills, knowledge and experience that can be applied to the new career you are aiming for.

To respond directly to your question, it will not be too late provided you are able to bring all this to the table and can convince the hiring manager of your genuine interest in the new field.

As for local or overseas studies, you are the best judge as you know your financial health. I can only advise that if you choose to study full-time, make sure you allocate time to stay in touch with the business world and continue to network.
