More jobs for seniors

I RECENTLY went to Standard Chartered Bank?s main office at Battery Road for a transaction during lunchtime.

There were a total of 12 counters at the bank, and the teller at counter eight caught my attention. Not only was he one of two men among the young female staff members, but he was also a senior citizen.

I was fortunate enough to be served by Mr Lee Hwee, the teller at counter eight. He was polite and careful in processing my transaction, which took a minute to complete. I was very pleased with his service.

It is not common to see senior citizens at bank counters, and I wish banks would be encouraged to hire more of them to man the counters.

Senior citizens are usually more patient and serious about their work. They are also steadier and calmer when faced with a problem, unlike some younger staff members who would not hesitate to show customers a black face.

I have also seen younger bank staff members gossiping or commenting about the customers' dress sense among themselves while handling banking transactions. Such behaviour is unprofessional and leaves a bad impression on customers.

What we need to do is create a friendly working environment to encourage senior citizens with invaluable experience to return to the workforce.

Kudos to Standard Chartered Bank in taking the lead in creating job opportunities for senior citizens.
