Want fair treatment? Then treat employer fairly
Thu, Jan 17, 2008
The New Paper

I refer to your article 'I was sacked via SMS' (The New Paper, 16 Jan).

I think Madam Cheryl Lee should have stated that she was pregnant when she filled up the application form. And during her interview, she should not have kept mum about it.

In my opinion, since she knew that she was pregnant in the first place, why did she apply to be a nurse, which is obviously a tiring job?

Furthermore, her employer, the Singapore Anti-Tuberculosis Association (Sata), had informed her of the nature of her duties, including having to stand for prolonged hours.

Furthermore, your article stated that Madam Lee would SMS her co-worker whenever she was absent. As most of us should be aware of, taking up a job is a responsibility. Madam Lee should have called her manager or someone of higher authority about not being able to go to work.

I think it is unfair that her colleagues had to cover her duties for her when she was absent.

Sata was kind enough to have let her work there in the first place, despite knowing that she was pregnant.

My view is that Madam Lee should not have complained to the Manpower Ministry as I believe Sata made the right decision.

Madam Lee was quoted in the article as saying "I'm not hoping for any compensation, but it's the principle of it that I'm disputing. It's not fair."

If Madam Lee had wanted to be treated fairly, she herself should've treated her employer fairly.
