BERLIN, GERMANY (AFP) - German rail operator Deutsche Bahn is set to sign a contract worth "billions of euros" to build railways in Qatar and Bahrain, a spokesman for Deutsche Bahn told AFP on Friday.

"A contract will be signed on Sunday between Deutsche Bahn and Qatar," he said, adding that the value of the deal would be "in the billions of euros."

German business newspaper Handelsblatt earlier reported that the contract would be worth a total of 16.7 billion euros ($34.4 billion).

The daily said the contract would include a rail network in the Qatari capital Doha as well as two high-speed lines -- to the Doha airport and to Bahrain.
