By Dawn Tay

He dreams of going global with his father's business in Myanmar and studying in Singapore is a stepping stone to turn his dreams into reality.

Myanmar national Steven Tan, 18, is studying for a diploma in banking, securities and investment management at APMI Kaplan, a subsidiary of global education institution Kaplan.

Mr Tan's father runs a successful home furnishing business in Myanmar. He aims to build upon his father's success by expanding the business overseas.

Said Mr Tan: "This diploma will provide a broad background for me to succeed as an international trader."

Mr Tan and Vietnam national Ho Thi Van Trang, 19, are among of the first batch of students taking this diploma, started by APMI Kaplan last week.

The comprehensive full-time diploma covers topics ranging from management, economics and corporate finance to operations and investment management. In addition, the diploma includes two professional qualifications by the Securities & Investment Institute (SII).

It is the largest professional body for the securities and investment industry in the UK.

The Investment Administration Qualification is a practitioner- led programme for administration and operations staff. It equips individuals with an overview of the financial service industry and its regulations.

The International Certificate in Investment Management is designed to provide a test of competence for would-be fund managers, investment managers, stockbrokers and other professionals who manage investments.

Said Ms Mona Poomy, executive vice-president of SII Asean: "The advantage of this three-in-one certification is that it provides practical depth to the qualification." Ms Poomy told my paper that competition for jobs is fierce in the global financial sector.

She said: "We're seeing an increased demand from employers for professionals with practical qualifications and not just theoretical (qualifications).

"The diploma is highly regarded by the industry, and graduates will be prime candidates for the most coveted jobs."

The 10-month course is taught over five terms and the next intake starts in October.
Course fees are $9,500 with GST.
In addition, students are required to pay a fee of $2,692.50 to SII.
