my paper
Jobless should not be choosy

I REFER to the letter, 'Face up to real jobless figures' (my paper, Sept 17).

As a grassroots leader, I have met residents of different backgrounds and ages struggling to find jobs, at Meet-The-People sessions and during house visits.

However, I still come across those who refuse jobs, due to factors such as workplace location, lower-than-expected salary, a requirement to wear uniforms and job scopes.

In the current economic climate, the jobless should not 'sit back and relax' in their search for jobs.

There are still many vacancies in cleaning companies, and sectors like retail, hospitality, security, transport, and food and beverage.

Employers should provide training and support to new recruits and employees.

They could also work with government agencies and grassroots organisations to publicise job vacancies.
