Valuable life lessons can be gained from joblessness
I LEARNT a lot during my 20 months of unemployment during the Sars period in 2003.
I would like to share with others how joblessness changed my life.
Becoming mentally stronger
I used to give up easily, especially when there were hurdles placed in front of me. However, I am now a steadier, calmer person.
Living more simply
I used to spend a lot on food, holidays and hobbies. I have cut down on my vacation expenditure and also live modestly in public housing to avoid being saddled with mortgage repayments.
Greater compassion for others
Those months of joblessness opened my heart to the less fortunate, and I decided to forge a career in social work.
I also worked with the unemployed and penniless in a Community Development Council as an employment consultant.
My experience as an unemployed person made it easier for me to allay their fears and give them hope.
The pay was low but the work was meaningful.
Most people who emerge from a prolonged period of unemployment always learn something along the way.
Some grow closer to their families. Others might make a career switch after they have changed their view of the world. But most importantly, they should not waste the opportunity to grow as a person when living with adversity.
