I WAS disappointed after reading Tuesday's report, 'Uproar over reports of IR jobs going to foreigners'. When the Government announced plans to have two integrated resorts (IRs), the impression given was that it would create many jobs for Singaporeans.

There was even anxiety over whether Singaporeans could meet IR staffing demands.

The opening of the IRs was also cited as a reason why courses in hospitality were popular in polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education.

Now, my friends and I who are in hospitality-related courses are doubtful and anxious about finding jobs after we graduate.

Furthermore, what is the point of fussing about snaking queues of applicants looking for jobs with IRs if they are hunting for staff around the region?

Should such jobs not go to Singaporeans first? Singaporeans must have priority and right of refusal. The Government and the IRs must work to ensure that Singaporeans who are qualified and want a job with the IRs get one.

Bilateral ties with other countries in the region are important, but they should not be at the expense of Singaporean rice bowls.
