JOHOR BARU, MALAYSIA: Almost 3,000 workers in Johor have been retrenched since October as a result of the global economic crisis.
State Unity, Human Resources, Science, Technology and Innovation Committee chairman M. Asojan said most of the 2,847 retrenched workers were from the manufacturing, electronics and textile sector.
He said the workers were from 72 companies statewide, adding that 1,674 of them were locals and 1,173 foreigners.
Asojan was responding to several questions related to retrenchment from 11 state assemblymen.
He said 155 retrenched workers had found jobs with the help of the state Labour Department. He said that of those who registered with the department, only nine workers were retrenched from Singapore.
"We have a Workers Relocating Programme twice a month and hope that those retrenched will be able to get a job via the programme," he said, adding that the programme also included training.
Asojan said the Government was also working closely with the Iskandar Region Development Authority to get the workers hired by companies setting up businesses in the region. --The Star/Asia News Netowrk
