Don't forget workers on commission-based terms
Tue, Jan 13, 2009
my paper

THERE have been reports in the media that contract workers have been facing problems with their employers, and that they sought help from the Ministry of Manpower (MOM).

People tend to forget that as Singapore progresses, there are more people who are employed on commission-based terms in industries like real estate, multi- level marketing, finance and other sales-related industries.

This is one approach most companies take to save costs.

As such workers' salaries are based on commissions, they do not fall under the purview of MOM.

Should there be any pay disputes, such workers have no avenues to turn to and are at the mercy of the companies they work for.

Seeking legal redress would also be a costly affair.

I hope that MOM could advise such workers on who they could seek advice from when faced with such issues.

Companies guilty of withholding the salaries of commission- based workers should be exposed.

Commission-based employees should not be excluded from receiving the protection that other workers enjoy.
