MR MARC FREEDMAN, 50, is the founder and CEO of Civic Ventures, a San Francisco-based advocacy group which encourages older people to begin socially-productive second careers.
In the mid-1990s, he spearheaded the creation of the Experience Corps, a kind of Peace Corps for those above 55, to mentor children from broken families and impoverished backgrounds in the US.
He also helped set up the The Purpose Prize in 2006, which honours older folk who have pioneered programmes to fight issues such as poverty, homelessness and climate change.
He is author of Encore: Finding Work That Matters In The Second Half of Life and Prime Time: How Baby Boomers Will Revolutionise Retirement And Transform America. His new book, On Purpose: Boomers, Work, And The Search For A Calling, will be out next year.
The history major from Swarthmore College, who has an MBA from Yale University, is married to Ms Leslie Gray, 42, who runs a garden design business. They have two children aged one and three.
