S'pore can improve on weaknesses during downturn

I WAS heartened to read that Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew assured Singaporeans that they have it in them to succeed at a Chinese New Year event in Tanjong Pagar GRC.

It is an undeniable fact that outlook, morale and psyche are the most important factors which determine the outcome of a battle.

That aside, an army must have a good commander who can lead the troops well. This analogy describes the situation Singapore is facing during this global economic downturn.

It also explains why MM Lee urged Singaporeans, especially youth, to adopt a fighting spirit and face this period of adversity with tenacity and confidence - qualities which he felt they had inherited from their pioneering forefathers.

The Singapore economy has a broad, solid base, equipped with diverse infrastructure. However, as it is export-driven, its recovery is very much dependent on an upswing in the United States.

Therefore, Singapore cannot escape from the global recession. It is vital that Singapore seizes the opportunities thrown up by the downturn and take stock of its strengths.

It should also look into whether there are areas in need of reform, innovation or improvement, so that weaknesses can be kept in check.

This approach will help the country weather the recession and emerge stronger than before.

Advice and encouragement from Singapore's leaders should be taken as part of a wider strategy to spur Singaporeans to strive harder and bravely face the challenges which lie ahead, so that the country's future will be bright.
