1 Recognise that this is likely to be an entire stage of life. So plan and prepare for it. 'You are looking at a 10-15 year trajectory, so things may not click overnight. Be patient. Don't expect that first position to be the one you will be stuck with,' says Mr Freedman.
2 Start by experimenting. If you want to move into the social sector, volunteer first and get on boards of non-profits to gain experience.
3 Go back to school to get specialised training for careers such as nursing, teaching and social work. 'If you are going to be practising for 10 or 15 years or longer, it's worth making that upfront investment.'
