Defer price increases till good times
Mon, Oct 13, 2008
my paper

THE authorities have finally confirmed that Singapore is in a recession.

We have seen increases in public-transport fares, electricity tariffs and telephone-line subscription rates.

What's next? There will definitely be more price increases for other essential services in the days to come.

Are the raises timely?

We will definitely see more unemployment, and with the Government's announcement of the country going into recession, companies will capitalise on the fact and implement pay cuts to their advantage.

I hope the authorities can do something about bringing about a revision of the price increases, as the companies which have made the raises are still profitable. It would make more sense to defer the increases until 'good times' come round.
