Overseas investment tops $372 billion for Singapore companies at end 2005

Asia is the top spot for Singapore companies investing abroad as overseas investment from Singapore's corporate sector grew 12.4 per cent to reach $372 billion at the end of 2005.

Overseas investment: what it comprises

Investment abroad comprises three major components. They are direct investment, portfolio investment and other foreign assets.

As of 2005, direct investment was the largest component, accounting for 49.8 per cent of total investment abroad. It grew from $175 billion a year ago to reach $185 billion.

However, its growth at 5.6 per cent was slower than the other two components as portfolio investment grew 22.4 per cent while other foreign assets increased by 18 per cent in 2005.

This is according to findings in the latest annual Survey of Singapore's Investment Abroad released by the Singapore Department of Statistics (DOS) earlier today.

The region accounted for 51.5 per cent of Singapore's total direct investment as at end 2005. Manufacturing, financial & insurance services and wholesale & retail trade, hotels & restaurants were the sectors which attracted the most investment from Singapore companies.

Singapore's investment in Asia was primarily in China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Hong Kong. Direct investment in China increased by 14.7 per cent to $25 billion as at end 2005, predominantly in manufacturing.

Nearer home, Singapore's direct investment in Malaysia increased by 7.5 per cent to reach $16 billion by 2005, with investors concentrating on manufacturing and financial & insurance services.

Investment in Indonesia was mainly in manufacturing, financial & insurance services and information & communications while Hong Kong's financial & insurance sector was the main draw for Singapore companies.

Besides Asia, South and Central America and the Caribbean also accounted for over 25 per cent of Singapore's direct investment. Investment, mainly in investment holding companies, was chiefly in financial & insurance services.

Other regions which saw significant investment from Singapore companies were Europe and the United States.

About the Survey of Singapore's Investment Abroad

This is an annual initiative by DOS. According to its report, the survey is conducted 'to meet the demand for timely and comprehensive data on Singapore's overseas investment position'.

Data from the survey was first released in Singapore's Investment Abroad, 1976-1989, in 1991. The latest survey was carried out in 2006/07 for reference year 2005.

According to DOS, the survey covered all locally incorporated companies and local branches of foreign companies that had investment abroad.

Financial institutions such as banks, finance and insurance companies, were included in the survey from 1994. Information related to transactions between Singapore companies and their overseas affiliates was also collected.

The data is used as inputs for compiling Singapore's International Investment Position (IIP) and Balance of Payments (BOP).
