No decision yet on funeral parlour site

WE REFER to the news report 'Buffer plan for funeral parlour hub in Sin Ming' (my paper, May 13).

The reporter highlighted in his article that planners were planning for a 'funeral parlour hub' which will 'house all the undertakers and funeral parlours in Singapore'. This is incorrect.

We have never planned for a funeral parlour hub.

The ongoing study by the Ministry of National Development, Housing and Development Board and Urban Redevelopment Authority is to look into the possibility of introducing a new concept of purpose-built funeral parlour developments.

The developments would be designed to provide dignified, private funeral facilities and services and to minimise disturbances to the surrounding neighbourhood.

As part of the study, a possible site was identified in Sin Ming. We are mindful of and sensitive to the residents' views and feedback on the location for the proposed purpose-built funeral parlour development.

To address potential disturbances to the immediate surrounding areas, stringent requirements will be imposed for the design and operation of such purpose-built funeral parlours.

We are still looking into the residents' feedback and inputs.

No decision on the location of the parlour has been made.

Mr Lim Eng Hwee
Director (Physical Planning)
Urban Redevelopment Authority
