MS TAN Chui Hua's response, 'Unsightliness not a reason to ban laundry lines' (Feb 21) to West Coast-Ayer Rajah Town Council's reply, 'Adopt proper laundry practices' (Feb 13) shows the 'whatever I don't want in my flat, I place outside' attitude of many residents.

This attitude makes flat exteriors (outside walls and ceilings, common corridors and parapets, lift lobbies and so on) cluttered, unsightly, a fire hazard, dirty and smelly.

If left unchecked, housing blocks may degenerate into high-rise slums.

I suggest that town councils carry out regular checks and enforce the maintenance policy more strictly, as illustrated in the town council brochure, 'Help Prevent Corridor Obstruction For A Safer Living Environment''.

Town councils should also build concrete awnings over the laundry-drying space of every flat to enable residents to adopt proper laundry practices.

Finally, all residents should abide by the town council's maintenance policy and help keep the neighbourhood clean to enjoy a better and happier living environment.
