Trendy hangout for expats and tourists

SUKHUMVIT, with its bustling streets and wealth of eateries, has the most condominiums in Bangkok and a flourishing expatriate population and tourist scene.

'The skytrain has really anchored Sukhumvit as the main area for high-rise living,' said CBRE Thailand executive director James Pitchon. While traditionally a residential area, it first saw developments over 12 storeys only about 20 years ago, he said.

Property experts say this is the area that new expats usually head for. There are plenty of condos - new or under construction - and no lack of restaurants, pubs and clubs.

Hotels are everywhere in the area, hence tourists. Generally, the top end of Sukhumvit, where traffic can be bad, is considered the city area, though fringe spots such as Ekamai are becoming popular. Trendy Thonglor in soi 55 is a destination in itself, with clusters of eateries and bars.

There is concern that there may be an oversupply of apartments in Bangkok but experts say these are limited to the low- to mid-tier market.

The high-end condos in the Sukhumvit area, such as Domus, have done well in the resale and rental market, said CBRE.

Savills Thailand's managing director, Mr Robert Collins, said there are still bargains in Bangkok. 'You may also get a free furniture package and a lucky dip with the prize being a car.'

Generally, people expect prices to go up once the political situation improves, said the firm's associate director, Mr Porawan Piyakraivudh.
