Credit problems? Help yourself out with these tips
WE REFER to the letter, 'Wanted: Advice on keeping good credit with banks', by Mr Nathan Dass (my paper, April 22).
Mr Dass may wish to seek help from Credit Counselling Singapore to find out how he can overcome his difficulties in paying his monthly loan instalments.
The organisation was set up primarily to assist consumers in recovering from serious debt problems by providing general credit-management information, credit counselling and, where applicable, put up a debt-repayment plan for suitable consumers with creditors.
Mr Dass may contact Credit Counselling Singapore via its hotline on 1800-225-5227.
Generally, an individual can take the following steps to maintain/improve his credit reputation with banks:
Pay his bills on time and preferably in full, where possible.
Pay down his debts and consider charging less.
Limit the number of credit cards he owns.
Cancel any unused cards.
Not applying for lots of credit at once.
Stay out of bankruptcy if he can.
Get his credit report.
Seek credit counselling.
Credit Bureau (Singapore) (CBS) would like to invite Mr Dass to obtain a copy of his personal credit report so that he can better understand the type of information that banks and financial institutions view when they retrieve his credit file.
He can obtain his credit report on the Internet via www.creditbureau.com.sg using his SingPass ID and password, at SingPost or from the CBS head office at Anson House.
Should he have further queries on obtaining his credit report, he can contact the CBS hotline on 6565-6363.
